From Poetry to Fabric: My Narrative of The History of Buttons and StitchesFrom childhood, literature and art have been inseparable parts of my life. My father was passionate about poetry and mysticism, often immersed in the ghazals of Hafez and other Persian poets. My mother, a fashion designer and dressmaker, introduced me to the world of color, texture, and form. I grew up in a space where poetry and fabric, words and patterns, breathed side by side.
Over time, my professional path began with painting, evolved into fashion design, and eventually embraced interdisciplinary projects. I have always seen art as a bridge — a meeting ground between cultures and disciplines. After moving to Germany, I conceived the idea of holding an online workshop to bring together Iranian artists from around the world to collaboratively create a shared work.
The History of Buttons and Stitches grew from that vision: a year-long project inspired by the poetry of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the German poet, in his West–Eastern Divan — a collection influenced by the works of Hafez, the great Persian poet. In this project, fashion designers, textile artists, and jewelry-makers joined forces to create coats, each telling its own cultural and poetic story.
Each coat is the product of three artists: a fashion designer, a textile artist, and a button-maker who approached their craft with sculptural or jeweler’s artistry. Despite the geographical distances, all ideation and coordination took place online.
This is my third interdisciplinary project in Germany, realized in collaboration with Weser Art Gallery and with the invaluable support of its director, Mr. Helmuth Gaber. His commitment and cooperation played a vital role in the visibility and expansion of this project. On the opening day, a report about this exhibition was produced and broadcast by the local German TV channel. (News link: butenunbinnen.de)
